April Platform Challenge: Day 14

For today's task, create a Google+ profile. Many of you may already have G+ profiles (if so, there are some extra tips below), but this social networking site is still rather new. Plus, Google+ just changed its interface, so we can hope it won't change again any time soon (maybe a few months at least).

Google+ is the social network tied to the top search engine.
That's got to count for something, right?

I've heard people describe Google+ as a mix between Facebook and Twitter, and I don't think that's too far off the mark. Personally, I think it's still growing, which can be a good and bad thing.

The good news is that you could still be one of the first G+-users on the block; bad news is that you have to wait (and hope) for other people to migrate over to the block. Of course, Google has a huge reach online, so there's no reason to doubt that people will migrate...eventually.

Oh yeah, here are those Google+ Tips for Writers I mentioned above (click here).

As with Facebook and LinkedIn, keep these tips in mind:
  • Complete your profile completely. Use your name. Provide easy to find contact information. Describe who you are.
  • Use an image of yourself. Not a cartoon. Not an animal. Not a piece of art. Remember that people like to connect with other people.
  • Post new content regularly. Let people know you are using your account. That means connecting with other G+'ers as well.
Have fun on Google+!

Did this a while back and then never did anything with it since no one seemed to be using it.

I'll go over to my account today and dust it off.

Maybe this MNINB challenge will be just the kick in the pants that Google+ needs to get up off the couch!

Lauren Miller said...

I'm with Anne on this one. I've updated my account and limited the amount of personal information the public has access to on Google +. Thanks for the tip about changing the settings for emails, Robert. :)

Argh! Get caught up. Stupid iPad.

I created a Google+ account during the beta phase intending to do a lot more with it, but was put off by Google's new privacy policy. Will take another look.

Also haven't found a way to make the link more user friendly.

I hate sounding so grumpy, but for me Google+ is somewhat akin to Pinterest. I just can't keep up with all of these different "places." I guess I'm trying to stick to a "quality over quantity" approach right now. At least, that's what I'm telling myself.

Jennifer said...

I already have a Google+ profile, though I basically abandoned it quite some time ago. Maybe I'll pop in there today and see what's up.

According to this post, http://mashable.com/2012/01/10/google-launches-social-search/ (which I'll confess I only partly understand), Google essentially prioritizes Google+ content in social searches, which, according to people who understand these things, means that bloggers really need to be on Google+. Apparently this piece of the platform puzzle has larger SEO ramifications that the others...but I'm naive as to all of this.

Jennifer said...

Erika - I want nothing to do with Pinterest, either. I don't care if it is the third largest social media network in the US. Not my thing.

Robert Lee Brewer said...

Erika and Jennifer, I'm planning on having a post about picking and choosing networks. I think it's a good idea to try the various platforms, but some sites are better than others for different writers.

I'd say more in this comment, but I really think it deserves a blog post worth of commentary. :)

Donna said...

Okay, done with this one.

Jen McPeek said...

Well, I can't say I like change, but I've added the account. Now it's time to update my blog and website to include this bit of information :)

Rebecca Barray said...

Done. ;)

PS Robert, I think your "Tax Day Tanka" is a one syllable short on the last line... but maybe I miscounted. Just FYI. ;)

Mariya Koleva said...

Hi, Robert, just now I was wondering when we would get to Google+ and if I really need to do it.
Will consider it a bit more.
Please, tell me your opinion of MySpace? It used to be something big. I know you used to be there (that's where you met Tammy, right :-)) I have Digg and Stumble, too and I really don't use them. Honestly, I wonder what to do there.

Gerry said...

I groaned when I saw this one, Robert, but then you said, "I'm planning on having a post about picking and choosing networks." I'll look forward to that. I have a Google+ account but abandoned it early on. Will read your tips today!

Joe O. said...

Ah man. I guess I'm out of the running for the prize, because although I have a Google Plus account I created to make leaving comments easier, I never completed it nor have plans to do so in the foreseeable future. At the moment I've got three distinct audiences on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter. I only know of a few people using Google's network, so for the moment I'm going to cultivate what I know I can work on and do my best to do it well. Prize or not, I'll check in to see the daily challenges and apply what fits with my current schedule and abilities. Thanks again for hosting this!

Finished! Managed to navigate the basics, but it seems a little more confusing to set up than Facebook or LinkedIn… I guess like everything else, it will become easier to use as I use it more.

My Google+ page is at:

https://plus.google.com/u/0/106920276403570077444/posts

I wanted to post something so my page wouldn't be blank, so I linked to the blog post from the other day, which in turn invites readers to link to my blog. Since it's also about the evolution of my online writing experience, I think it's kind of a nice introduction to my platform as a whole.

I was actually invited to join the circle of the Rescue that is behind the No Kill Shelter Conference my cats are currently blogging about.

I joined, and set up an account, but after that found it just too confusing so deleted in after a couple of days.

Not sure I'll try again, but will read the writer tips for G+, and your future post about picking & choosing.

BTW, with Pinterest you request an invite to join, and they send you a note that welcomes you, and lets you know that they will tell you what to do to join soon, as you are on a waiting list. :-D

So I wait. :-D

I did sign up for Google+ yesterday, now along with some other goals, I plan to update my profile on all networks but perhaps not today.

Jeannine B. Everett said...

I set up an account a while ago, but no one ever seems connected to it. I don't feel comfortable sending invites to join G+. I'm sure I'm not the only one, so until they can prove their worth, like linked in, they won't get critical mass.

Susan Craig said...

I opened the acct., but nobody I searched for came up...not even you, Robert Lee Brewer! And I needed to take a username different than on most media, so I won't be easy to find on this either, I fear.

Lynn Daue said...

Done. Irked, but done. Google+ isn't as intuitive as it should be. Yet.

I already had a Google+ account also. Mostly out of curiosity. But, like many others, I don't know many people there.

We should start our own MNINB challenge circle.

I'm April Galloway - Google+http://bit.ly/HTYJOL

Their profile naming method makes a really ugly link. Maybe they'll change it as they continue to develop the program.

Found Robert. He's "Robert Brewer," not Robert Lee Brewer. Not brave enough to go a-searchin' yet, but will be "accepting"all requests (if that's what they're called on Google+.

Done. But I'm not excited about this one. I feel like we might be spreading ourselves too thin by being on so many social media sites. Plus, I'm not one of google's biggest fans. I probably won't keep this when the challenge is over, but it's worthwhile to see what it's like.

I did this a while ago and I actively use it. I have met some great people on it as well as a whole multiple sclerosis network.

I highly encourage people to give it a try. As you get used to all the social platforms, you will see that this is different than FB because you connect with new people who have similar social interests.

Any of you can connect with me, if you want. I created an MNINB circle. The nice thing is you can share whole circles with someone!

I've been on Google+ a couple of months now and use it regularly to share things, but confess that I find it very non-user friendly and that it is very difficult to even find help or information on using it more effectively. It's true that not many people are on it yet.

That said, I do actually get a fair amount of traffic from it, so if you have a particular "niche", search for that and make some friends with them.

Find me there and if you need help, ask me and I'll do my best to assist!

In the spirit of being consistent, I attempted to create a profile for my online persona, Veggie Val. I have used this name for years on Facebook, Twitter, my podcasts and even the cooking classes I teach , but Google decided the name does not meet their reqs. I have, therefore, petitioned to have the name reviewed and had to give supporting evidence that I am known by this name. Now, I await the decree of the almighty Google. Until then, they have suspended my account. Please consider this portion complete. This could be interesting!

I had signed up for Google+ months ago but never did this full bio part. I added a lot more today, but for some reason, Google+ would not let me put in my blog address - and considering it's blogspot by Google, that's pretty weird.

I also am not enamored with so many social media sites. Just thinking about having to keep up with all of them tires me out...I'd rather write or paint or chat with friends.

I already had Google+, though I (like a lot of others) rarely if ever use it. Honestly after getting it set up I was a little networked-out ... because it's on top of my blog, two Facebook accounts (and my own Facebook page on top of two others I help moderate), LinkedIn, two Twitter accounts (one personal, one professional) ... EEP! My brain overloads rather quickly. I don't think I will ever really be into Google+ ... but then, I also remember saying I'd never get into Facebook...
